The Vision of the One Who Has Been Living Forever

Daniel 17.9-10 and 13_14

Good News Translation (GNT)

*************************

9  While I was looking, thrones were put in place.
One who had been living forever sat down on
one of the thrones. His clothes were white as
snow, and his hair was like pure wool.
His throne, mounted on fiery wheels, was
   blazing with fire,
10  and a stream of fire was pouring out from it.
There were many thousands of people there
to serve him, and millions of people stood
before him. The court began its session, and
   the books were opened.
13  During this vision in the night, I saw what
   looked like a human being.
He was approaching me, surrounded by
clouds, and he went to the one who had been
living forever and was presented to him.
14  He was given authority, honor, and royal
power, so that the people of all nations, races,
   and languages would serve him.
His authority would last forever, and his
   kingdom would never end.

The Vision of the One Who Has Been Living Forever

      Daniel 7.9-10 and 13-14

Apocalyptic writing invites the reader to see things in a different way.
The world is not as it appears.
It may look out of control and God's people may not seem to have any future, but that is not the whole story.
Apocalyptic shows us God's perspective.

In chapter 7 we are back in the reign of Belshazzar (v 1).
As I write these notes, the world news is full of vicious conflicts in many places and I am sickened by the callous way in which warring leaders pursue power, seemingly indifferent to the suffering caused to ordinary citizens.
today, we focus on the new and encouraging visions which Daniel recounts in verses 9-14.

First (vs 9,10), we see where power truly lies: with God.
Our youth-obsessed western culture may regard the phrase 'Ancient of Days' (One who had been living forever) as implying the frailty of old age, but in Israelite and Babylonian culture it denotes someone respected and wise, never taken by surprise, someone who has been present long before these temporary empires: in fact, the God who has existed from eternity.

True 'authority, glory and sovereign power' (v 14) are given by God to 'one like a son of man' (v 13), someone who is all that humans were intended to be.

Imagine yourself in the throne room of God.
Pray again, perhaps with new intensity, 'Your kingdom come'.
