The Promise to Send a Prophet

Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Good News Translation (GNT)

15  Instead, he will send you a prophet like me
from among your own people, and you are to
   obey him. (a)
16  "On the day that you were gathered at
Mount Sinai, you begged not to hear the Lord
speak again or to see his fiery presence any
more, because you were afraid you would die.
17  So the Lord said to me, 'They have made a
   wise request.
18   I will send them a prophet like you from
among their own people; I will tell him what to
say, and he (b) will tell the people everything
   I command.
19   He will speak in my name, and I (c) will punish
anyone who refuses to obey him.
20  But if any prophet dares to speak a message
in my name when I did not command him to
do so, he must die for it, and so must any
prophet who speaks in the name of other
   gods.'

The Promise to Send a Prophet

    Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Moses does two things in these verses. First of all, he prophesies regarding the coming of the Messiah to whom he refers as "a Prophet." Secondly, Moses warns against false prophets

What we worship matters terribly. Moses insists we need to worship the true God in a true way.

To help the people in this, God provides a mouthpiece - a prophet, just as Moses has been (v 15).

History would prove the importance of this. As you consider the multiple voices clamouring for your attention in our culture, ask God for the wisdom to discern what is true and what is false.

A true prophet is one in whose mouth God puts his words (v 18). What he prophesies will come true (v 22), but this is not the sole test.

Even if his prophecies come true, if a prophet leads the people astray by pointing to other gods, then he is a false prophet (Deuteronomy 13:1-3).

Because of the great spiritual danger false prophets and sorcerers brought to the nation, they were to be 'put to death' (v 20).

Israel was warned that it would suffer the fate of the Canaanites if it repeated their practices. God promised that he would raise up a true prophet, a Messianic figure (v 15).

Scripture would later reveal him to be Jesus Christ (Acts 3:22). God would speak through him clearly and expect everyone to listen to him (v 15).

He alone is the way to receive God's help and guidance (John 14:6). God alone is the real deal.

Through his prophets - and finally and most fully through Jesus - he reveals, not necessarily what we want to know, but what we need to know for salvation.

The command 'listen to him' (v 15) is echoed by the Father at Jesus's transfiguration (Matt 17:5). His words are all we need, his voice is the only one we must heed.
