Israel's New Life
Ezekiel 36:24-28
Good News Translation (GNT)
*************************
24 I will take you from every nation and country
and bring you back to your own land.
25 I will sprinkle clean water on you and make
you clean from all your idols and everything
else that has defiled you.
26 I will give you a new heart and a new mind.
I will take away your stubborn heart of stone
and give you an obedient heart.
27 I will put my spirit in you and will see to it that
you follow my laws and keep all the
commands I have given you.
28 Then you will live in the land I gave your
ancestors. You will be my people, and I will
be your God.

Heart of stone, heart of flesh
Ezekiel 36:24-28
The promises in this passage make it
one of my favourite parts of the Old Testament.
Once again, God calls Ezekiel
to relay a message of hope to his people.
He will bring them back to their own land
and allow them to begin again.
He will take away the burden of sin
and pain and allow them to
live and breathe freely again.
Obedience to his covenant will become easier,
since the Spirit of God will live within them,
and they will be his people once more.
What beautiful words, and how they echo down
the centuries, as we see them made new and fresh
in the life and works of Jesus!
Through the waters of baptism,
we are given the opportunity
to be washed clean of all our sins.
Through Christ's death and resurrection,
this opportunity is held out to us again
and again to repent and be forgiven
by his grace.
The Spirit, who descended upon the disciples
at Pentecost, lives and breathes within us,
transforming our stony hearts into living,
loving instruments of God's love as
'God lives in us and his love is perfected in us'
(1 John 4:12, NRSV).
As we eat and drink at the Lord's table,
we become dwellers in his Word made flesh.
'Hearts of stone, relent, relent!
Break, by Jesus' cross subdued...
with all my sins I'll part: Saviour,
take my broken heart'
(Charles Wesley, 1707-88).
