Jesus before Pilate

John 18:33-37

Good News Translation (GNT)

*************************

33  Pilate went back into the palace and called
Jesus. "Are you the king of the Jews?"
   he asked him.
34  Jesus answered, "Does this question come
from you or have others told you about me?"
35  Pilate replied, "Do you think I am a Jew?
It was your own people and the chief priests
who handed you over to me.
   What have you done?"
36  Jesus said, "My kingdom does not belong to
this world; if my kingdom belonged to this
world, my followers would fight to keep me
from being handed over to the Jewish
authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong
   here!"
37  So Pilate asked him, "Are you a king, then?"
Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king.
I was born and came into the world for this
one purpose, to speak about the truth.
Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me."

Jesus before Pilate

    John 18:33-37

I've just finished a rattling good novel that hinged on the true identity of its main character being unknown.
The plot only made sense once his identity was revealed and then, too late, people wished they'd treated him differently.
When Jesus went on trial, his judges clearly had no idea who he really is, or they would have acted very differently.

Trial before the Roman governor.
Pilate had a different agenda.
Representing the world's most powerful government, he could not let any sedition undermine it.

The Jews had a reputation for being troublesome, especially at Passover time, so he was on his guard.
Their leaders alleged that Jesus had claimed to be a king, but the simple Galilean who stood before him, weary and alone, didn't look like one.
Pilate struggles to square their allegations with the man he encounters.

Is he really a king?
Does he have any power?
What is this claim to speak truth, in a world where Rome decided what was truth?

Their conversation proved a classic in non-communication, as Jesus and Pilate functioned on different planes over questions of power and truth.

If only Pilate had known who really was on trial!
