Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee

Luke 4:14-21

Good News Translation (GNT)

*************************

14  Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power
of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news
about him spread throughout all that territory.
15  He taught in the synagogues and was praised
   by everyone.

   Jesus Is Rejected at Nazareth
16  Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had
been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went
as usual to the synagogue. He stood up
   to read the Scriptures
17  and was handed the book of the prophet
Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the
   place where it is written,
18        "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has chosen me to bring good
news to the poor. He has sent me to
proclaim liberty to the captives and
recovery of sight to the blind, to set free
         the oppressed
19        and announce that the time has come
when the Lord will save his people."
20  Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to
the attendant, and sat down. All the people in
the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him,
21  as he said to them, "This passage of scripture
has come true today, as you heard it
   being read."

Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee

     Luke 4:14-21

When Jesus was baptised, the Holy Spirit descended on Him.
Then, when He had resisted Satan and gained victory over him,
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.

Jesus did His mighty works through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Without the Spirit, our preaching and teaching is without power. This is why, when Jesus taught the people, they were amazed and spread the news about Him through the whole countryside.

Many Bible scholars believe that Luke placed this story of the visit to Nazareth near the beginning of his Gospel because it explains so clearly the purpose of Jesus' ministry.
The Jews held their religious services in the synagogue in each village. The services took place each Saturday, the Sabbath day. It was the custom during the service to read from a scroll of the Old Testament.

Often visitors to the synagogue were invited to read the lesson or to give a comment on it.
The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Jesus to read. He read from Isaiah 61:1-2,
in which Isaiah prophesies about the Messiah.
Thus, when Jesus read it, He was truly speaking about Himself.

Jesus was the "anointed one," that is, the Messiah.
The poor here are not only the poor in possessions, but also the poor in spirit, who gladly receive the good news of salvation.
The prisoners are not only actual prisoners in jail, but they are also spiritual prisoners of sin, of Satan.
Jesus came to set them free; to forgive their sins.
He was sent to bring sight for the blind. He not only opens men's bodily eyes, but He opens their spiritual eyes as well.
He was sent to release the oppressed.
People were oppressed by their rulers the Romans, by their own hypocritical religious leaders, and by the rich and powerful.
But they were also oppressed by fears and doubts and sinful lusts. Jesus offered them release, peace, joy.

Finally, Jesus was sent to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour - that is, the coming of the Messiah, the consolation of Israel.
Everyone in the synagogue was amazed at the way Jesus read these words. They had heard these words from Isaiah read to them many times before, but they had never heard them read like this!

It was as if the prophet Isaiah himself were speaking - no, - more than that - the Messiah Himself!

After He had finished reading from the book of Isaiah, Jesus said to the people,
"Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.
The Messiah has come!"
