God the Supreme King
Psalm 96
Good News Translation (GNT)
1 Sing a new song to the Lord!
Sing to the Lord, all the world!
2 Sing to the Lord and praise him!
Proclaim every day the good news that he
has saved us.
3 Proclaim his glory to the nations, his mighty
deeds to all peoples.
4 The Lord is great and is to be highly praised;
he is to be honoured more than all the gods.
5 The gods of all other nations are only idols,
but the Lord created the heavens.
6 Glory and majesty surround him;
power and beauty fill his Temple.
7 Praise the Lord, all people on earth;
praise his glory and might.
8 Praise the Lord's glorious name; bring an
offering and come into his Temple.
9 Bow down before the Holy One when
he appears;(a) tremble before him, all the
earth!
10 Say to all the nations, "The Lord is king!
The earth is set firmly in place and cannot
be moved; he will judge the peoples with
justice."
Roar, sea, and every creature in you;
12 be glad, fields, and everything in you!
The trees in the woods will shout for joy
13 when the Lord comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the peoples of the world with
justice and fairness.

God the Supreme King
In this psalm, one is able to feel again the joyfulness
with which the community proclaimed God's glory,
but on this occasion,it seems that the people may have
gathered from different parts of the country and even beyond.
The psalm opens by addressing not just Israel but the
whole world (v. 1)
It is probable that this particular celebration lasted for more
than one day.
It is thought that this was used as part of the great
Festival of Tabernacles
(Sukkot in Hebrew), which occurred each October.
Sukkot had two themes - one was thanksgiving for the autumn
harvest; the other was a
re-enactment and renewal of the convent
between God and his people.
This call to worship was sung before the processions entered
the temple, and it was a reminder that the response to God's
bounty was to offer worship.
Worship is the one thing we can give to God that is of ourselves.
Through worship, we acknowledge God's glory;
we give God glory and we are glorified.
Psalm 96 is determined to proclaim this good news as far afield as
possible, and a slightly unusual feature is that it seems almost
missionary.
It challenges the gathered community to make God's glory known
throughout the world.
When Christians rediscover this kind of God, then our proclamation
of his kingship, either in words or good deeds to others,
truly becomes good news today.
'Make our worship more worthy,
our witness more effective
and our lives more holy'
